Speakers

Christi Bode: Christi Bode is a mid-career documentary filmmaker residing in Southwest Colorado. From watershed health and wildfires to environmental justice and climate adaptation, she unpacks a wide range of topics about water in dry places. She produces films for a range of conservation groups, natural resource agencies, local governments, Tribal Nations, NGOs and media outlets throughout Colorado's nine river basins and beyond.  Christi is dedicated to mentoring the next generation of storytellers, regularly collaborating with universities and schools to inspire students. Her curiosity and concern for today's youth is the basis for her next PBS documentary, Thirsting for a Future: Youth & Water in a Changing Climate, which takes a closer look at Colorado's K-12 climate education.

Kevin Donegan: Kevin manages the work of the Hydrogeology Section, which serves DWR staff with geological and hydrogeological evaluations and support. Primary support is for water well permitting assistance including determination of aquifers, aquifer boundaries, saturated thickness, alluvial/aquifer interaction, and completion intervals. The group implements the Well Inspection Program and the Statewide Groundwater Monitoring Network, while also supporting DWR in water court proceedings, subdivision reviews, and anytime hydrogeological expertise is needed. Kevin graduated from Hamilton College with a B.A. in Geology.

Jake Kurzweil: Dr. Jake Kurzweil is a research hydrologist with a focus on understanding how forest, stream, and wetland restoration can improve watershed resilience through improved hydrologic function. His work primarily focuses on processes in the San Juan Mountains that include forest-snow interactions, alpine fen restoration, riparian wetland restoration, and low-tech process based stream restoration. Dr. Kurzweil has a Bachelors from University of Oregon as well as a master and PhD from the Colorado School of Mines.

Jon Reed: Jon Reed been a Professional Ski Patroller at Wolf Creek Ski Area for 27 years and completed Level 3 Professional Avalanche Education through the American Avalanche Institute in Jackson Hole Wyoming in 2014. Since 2010 he's been a Colorado Rapid Avalanche Deployment (C-RAD) team leader with Flight for Life and currently work with his avalanche search and rescue dog Remmie. He has been an EMT-Intermediate since 1997 and current supervisor of the medical program at Wolf Creek.

Anna Ryken, Ph D: Anna Ryken is the Colorado River Technical Specialist with the Interstate, Federal, and Water Information (IFWI) Section of the Colorado Water Conservation board (CWCB). She uses her background in field work as well as surface water, groundwater, and lower atmosphere interactions to provide technical analysis and modeling support for Colorado River policy issues.

Matt Sares: Matt is the former Hydrogeology Section Chief for DWR, retiring from that position in 2023. Since then, he has failed his attempt at retirement because he likes getting into hot water. He currently works part-time with the Colorado Geological Survey researching the state’s geothermal resources, in all its forms.

Jim White: Jim White is an Aquatic Biologist with Colorado Parks and Wildlife and part of the team that "rediscovered" what was thought to be the extinct lineage of native cutthroat trout in the San Juan River Basin. Jim spent his early career with the Jicarilla Apache Nation as a fisheries biologist, where he worked on establishing a couple of Rio Grande Cutthroat Trout populations. Jim has an undergraduate degree from Ft. Lewis College in Durango and a M.S. in Fisheries Ecology from Northern Arizona University.
